Circuville

Circuville is a fictional city that showcases many ideas for how we can live in a way that is good for the planet. Many of the ideas presented are already being implemented in various parts of the world. In our work, we use Circuville to discuss what people like, what we can already do, what we don’t like, and what needs to change to make this city a reality. We use it with planners, policymakers, and people like you.

Deliverable D3.3

Handbook on developing integrated scenarios to explore sustainable land use strategies

PLUS Change investigates how to achieve sustainable future land use. One of the methods for understanding how future land use might contribute to wellbeing, biodiversity and climate goals and how to implement this are scenarios. There are two types of scenarios in the PLUS Change project. Through Possible landscape sessions, a participative bottom-up scenario is created for each practice case participating in the project. Through policy analysis, a policy-driven top-down scenario is also created for each practice case.

Deliverable D3.5

Land systems maps of spatially explicit land use scenarios

This Deliverable is part of Task 3.4 “Modelling land use change scenarios from different levels” within Work Package 3 “Future Sustainable Land Use Strategies” of the PLUS Change project. Its main objective is to translate the qualitative scenarios developed in previous tasks into spatially explicit land system maps for Europe in 2050, thereby operationalising visions and policy trends into model-based futures.

Circuville for Practice cases

Circuville was created by Biobased Creations and Studio Goudbaard for PLUS Change: a Horizon Europe funded programme that aims to develop strategies and decision-making processes for land use that effectively address challenges related to climate change, biodiversity, and human well-being.

Circuville is a series of busy pictures that bring the big European challenges (climate, circularity, biodiversity, social justice) back down to the scale of the countryside, the city, the neighbourhood and daily life. The drawings show how choices in design, material and land use, mobility and governance influence one another. They include existing and possible applications, placing them side by side so the whole system becomes visible and tangible. To create each story, we draw on scientific research, practice based examples and Artistic Intelligence: an artistic way of seeing that makes complex transitions understandable, tangible and actionable.

For each of the twelve cases within PLUS Change, we develop one Circuville drawing. These help policymakers, professionals, residents, organisations and researchers think, talk and decide together, not based on abstract reports, but on a shared picture of what a circular and just living environment could look like.

Circuville is a tool, a language and a hybrid format, opening up, making sense of and accelerating complex transitions.
